So I started reading "My Life On the Road" by Gloria Steinem. I'm two chapters in. The book basically starts out with her background and what her father was like (he traveled a lot). Then it goes into how she went to India and what life was like there. After that, she starts getting more into her brand of Feminism. The "interesting" thing about the book is that she will assert a lot of things with very few sources, and the sources she does make are to other Feminist books and articles. She also loves to mischaracterize situations. For instance, she talks about how the KKK was fighting women's rights, and she sets up a dichotomy of the pro-equality and anti-equality. And the way she explains it, she tries to make it seem like the anti-equality group is basically the KKK (of course, this was not the only group against what they were trying to do). She also groups all of the issues together as the group of issues for equality. So for instance, the group against abortion is anti-equality. Then of course, the group that is anti-equality is the KKK. So there's this idea never stated but obviously she wants people to draw the conclusion that you either support Gloria Steinem Feminism or you are a part of the KKK. This is obviously faulty, but this will work on people. And then of course she talks about White men in a negative light for controlling society, and that women find allies in minority groups (Native Americans, gays/lesbians, etc. ). This book is obviously intended for people who are already likely to agree with her. It's more of an informative style than a persuasive style. People that already like her want to know about how she became who she is, and how she did what she did. As far as the rights debate, however, this book offers very little so far.
